a few weeks back
i got offered a part in a new musical playing at sydney fringe festival
its called "van park" n its written by greg appel
greg was a member of the lighthouse keepers
who had an amazing indy hit with a song called gargoyle
back in the early eighties
gargoyle was a song i wished i'd written myself
russells band the crystal set did a version on one of their records
so i pricked up my ears
when i got offered this part
the part of nebauchenezzar
a mysterious ex rockstar who now lives in a caravan park
down the coast of new south wales
appearing also in the musical is john paul young
the famous aust singer who sang love is in the air
among others
he plays another ex rocker type a more basic n brutal
the play is funny poignant and has some truly beautiful songs
i did a reading yesterday n a bit of a sing
and they have found a wonderful singer/actress
to play the character of gypsy fire
who is married to jpy's character but with whom nebauchanezzar
is also in love
the play is a real delight
and the songs are mind blowingly good
nebauch is a strange old bird pontificating on life
and moving thru van park in his cloak
i cannot wait to get my teeth into this
its like this part was written for me
we will be doing five performances at the seymour centre in sydney
in september
and will be hoping the play gets picked up for other cities
the band king curly will be backing the play featuring gregs brother steve
i cant overstate how good the script and songs are
and i hope all ttb enthusiasts will turn out to catch this one
im very very excited
and i feel lucky to be involved in such a good thing

Performing in a well written play is very exciting !!! I had the grand opportunity when I was 20 years old (shit...that was over 20 years ago). i was more nervous than you can possibly imagine. that old advice of squashing ur nerves by picturing ur fellow cast members and the audience in their undies is folklore. but, i tried it and really wished it worked because there were MANY gorgeous ladies working with me and in the audience. All that aside, i know and i am very confidant that u and the play will be spectacular. only wish that we (here in the states) could witness ur first dive into a new media for ur self.
Last night i sat in quiet darkness for hours listening to AENT and imagined that as a set performed live for me. I am fascinated with that time period for the church because it profoundly shows how all the instruments that u guys have at ur disposal can meld into an enchanting atmosphere. Marty and Peter are synced together as Tim sets many bewildering tempos, ur bass is the pulse of that album. I believe it is one (if not the best) of the best bass playing u ever done. The lyrics are tales sung/written by someone who knew that people would gather around and embrace each other with passion. It is one of the bands finest moments, but sadly, it never received its praise here in the states. Why is the music industry force feeding the masses with garbage when true excellence was right at their finger tips all along. anyways...learn ur lines well because u will truly enjoy this new experience and it will supercharge your being (timebing that is).

Fantastic Steve, so happy for you! I've always maintained that the only genre in which musical theatre truly breaks through is rock; somehow the inherent theatrics and angst just match up naturally.
Sounds good from what you say. Sadly though being half a world away I won't be able to see it for real, but a fantastic birthday treat for you none the less.
Obviously I wish you and the rest of the cast all the success in the world, or as they say in theatre land - break a leg!!

Sounds like a cool production... I really dig the Crystal Set version of "Gargoyle" but have not heard the original... hope all goes well with the play.
There is a casting call for a local tv series near Portland...I was thinking about trying out though it is a bit of a drive and I got a regular job. It must be fun to have so many creative options. Will you get paid? Even better if you did.
Soungs like Aust is the place to be... I am getting tantalized... Church tours, solo gigs, poetry readings, now musicals... I hope you'll eventually tour Europe again!!! I attended the FY tour gig at the Mean Fiddler in London, where I briefly shook hand and talked with you before the show, and then again the show at the Borderline for the Uninvited like the clouds acoustic set- but I can't wait for you guys to come back to Europe- will it happen? Italy, never again? you said one Itali is an SK kind of place... There's people here in Europe who can't wait to see you guys again!!!
Well, anyway congrats for the part in this musical, I wish I could attend.

Sounds great! If I was in the region I'd be sure to come to at see it. Nebauchenezzar -- yep, that would be the name of your character! Love it.
Maybe you can get someone to video a bit (even of rehearsals) and put it up on ttb.com. That would good advertising for the play and would also be a little treat for those of us who can't see it live. At the very, very least we need a pic of you in that cape.... ;-)
Oh that sounds truly awesome; I only with I could come to aussie to see it OR you could bring it to the states. I love theatre productions with that sort of theme; and indeed...you do sound just perfect for the role. Things sound like they're really coming your way for you. Best wishes.

Sounds like you're having a fun time with this project sk, and yeah, I really hope you bring it here for the Melby Fringe Festival starting in September!! Get your friend to contact "LaMama" Theatre or LaMama Courthouse Theatre in Carlton, it's kind of small, but they would no doubt be interested. There's so many venues here to choose from, get your friend onto it, pronto!!!

Sounds very exciting sk. Hope it gets a long run and tours the country. A play and songs, two for the price of one, that's good value. Like JPY, gonna see him in August at the Dee Why RSL.

Actually it isn't Steve's first foray into stage acting. In 2005 (I think) Steve played Shylock in a production of The Merchant of Venice Beach, and in 2007 he was in a play called Zoo Story.

Gipsy Fire is the name of a woman who had a one night stand with Bob Dylan and then sued a trashy newspaper for reporting on it. And won.
Just google "Gipsy Fire Bob Dylan " and the whole bizarre story will come up .
I remember when this happened. She says in her account it was in the US but I remember it as happening on an Australian tour and the newspaper was the Daily Telegraph.
You cant make this stuff up...its truly bizarre.
