last night i played memory motel by the stones
at a private birthday party in a big house east subs
it was for someones 40th birthday
it was their favourite song
i was paid well
plus something extra nice
i felt i won them over
several quite olde ladies
came up and said
i wished you played longer love
i coulda listened to ya forever
we got an early night
next day today
(strangely enough)
i play a gig at tamarama beach
a violent thunderstorm
with bolts of lightning illuminating the whole sky
torrential rain reigning o'er me
olde dirty sydney swept cleen
brightened up
oh every thing so green and sparkly
at tamarama beach
which is a beautiful and delightful spot
next to the little kiosk/cafe
was a tent containing
brendan g on slide
bernie h on guitar
jonny z on bass
hamish on drums
peter od on guitar
we played a fantastic version of providence
it was live to air on the abc
gee it was a nice version though
jonny z....oh what a tricky bass player
this guy is a 9 n a half
and thats why im a 7
anyway i was very pleased with it
then me n fambley drive to petersham
we find the way
we get detoured
we scramble for a park
its bigger than vegan day apparently
inside i walk thru crowd and stalls
i find a backstage room
i tune up
im playing the guitar to myself in the mirror
running a very critical eye over the timed being
hmmm
well i am 53
i suppose
anyway
there i am like narcissus
watching my vain self in reflection
when one of the organisers walks in
a bemused smile
as i turn around and see her watching me
silently
huh showbiz types she thinks
i go on
im good
yeah
ive said it
under the most trying of conditions
in a town hall packed with people buying vegan products
and talking eating laughing
with bright horrible lights
with no fold back
ie i couldnt hear the guitar at all
yet
i got through
thank you yoga
thank you india
thank you swimming laps
thank you qi gong
thank you meddi-tation
i now have a deep spring inside me
to draw forth the wherewithal however i shall need it
this allows me
to talk to high school kids for 2 hours about songwriting
to play in tents in dusty windy fields with a fucked p a
to play at birfday parties
to play at wineries in 45 degree heat
to play in noisy town halls at noon
i am able to go the distance
halfway through i stopped
gave em the veg rant
which is
that being veg
will
*keep you healthier
*save the worlds meagre resources
*reduce needless suffering for countless sentient creatures
*reduce negative karma
*increase awareness of our interconnection
*towards a happier world
*towards spiritual realisations
*higher vibrations
*make you sexier
*make you slimmer
*make you look and feel younger
*live and let live
then i played some more
and i walked out into the sydney sunshine
quite pumped up on adrenaline
feeling restless and vaguely unfulfilled
on the trafficky journey home
came in to our cool dark bedroom
to have a little nap
and after 5 minutes
the doof doof started up
ripping me from my peaceful slumber
now im gonna take twillies n doodles to nielsens for a swim
ive deserved it

hey sk, went to see ya at the veganfest today, loved the meat is murder rave - was especially moved that you spoke about the 'energetic' effect consuming animals products has on human(not)kind...it got me thinking about what more I could do to raise my 98% vego lifestyle to 100%...
my friend, who hadnt laid eyes on you for many many years said how beautifully youre ageing, on many levels, I agree (of course)...

Sounds fulfilling to me but giving, giving, giving can take it (energy) out of you tho. I’m not proud to admit that I’m not a vege – don’t really enjoy cooking/eating meat, don’t everyday, however when I tried to be a vege about 20 yrs ago I became seriously anaemic. Your themes in your blogs are beginning to play on my conscience. I’m probably going to cop a flogging from all the 'veges' now, (paying me back for all the ones I've killed in my fridge). I need to find out how to do it properly. Hey, is anyone going to the Queenscliff Music Fest (south of Melb), Nov 23-25th? I’ve never been b4 I’ve heard it is a great fest. Besides lots of music over 3 days there’s a youth music venue for my teenagers to play in and enjoy. Great to hear some of the Church classics, stripped back to just acoustic guitar.
On another note, definitely food for thought re meat comments..I am a semi vegan ( if there is such a thing ) due to food allergies, might go all the way.

Just to let you know - you weren't just 'preaching to the converted' as you thought you were in Melbourne. I dragged many people along who have never considered the subject and I'm sure it got some of them thinking.
My friend next to me said 'Oh God no' as you were talking about the torture of the little piglets. Your rave was intense just as I thought it would be, saying all the things that many of us think. That 'self righteous' label is such a hard one isn't it?
My friend in her 20's couldn't believe you were 53,(said you were hot) and thought you must have had 'work done' and I said I don't think so, he just swims and does yoga and eats well.
Loved hearing you sing too as always of course.
You should have stayed to see my belly dance troupe - we were hot too.
I do hope you come back next year too.

Blown away that after months of not reading this great blog, to come back and have happy memories rekindled, of chatting pleasant nights away over bottles of wine, watching the sun rise over Tamarama beach. Then wake up to eat macrobiotically (I was good in those days) before walking along the beaches or visiting gelato bars in Bondi. Oh, miss Sydney and the lifestyle, stuck in the English Midlands where there's no sea for absolutely miles.....

this blog is often a great source of support and inspiration for vegans and vegitarians. Thanks for the words of encouragement sk. The path we've chosen can be very difficult.
We live in a world of carnivors. As a business person I do eat out alot and no matter where i go, save the suisi bar and a cafe close to my office i always feel like a pain in the ass when ording my BLT without the B and extra T with no mayo. We do not live in a veg friendly world, so when you can meet up with like minded individuals its a blessing.
Nice to see the support you throw behind these events, to raise awareness and funds for educations,etc.

Love Reign O'er Me - was watching a documentary on The "Ooo" last night, did not know Townshend never actually met Meher Baba. Entwistle was a great bass player; crafted a unique style and tone, especially given the time period - fit their raucous music perfectly. Was inspired to put on Tommy and listen to it in it's entirety. Some amazing songs. Townshend interviews well - has an engaging conversational style, wit, intellect.

I'm elated that Sk had a great weekend. His dynamic voice, cerebral and compassionate worldview and talent are certain to resonate. Nice comments from commentors on the vegan gig. As a veg with girth I can tell people that vegan food is so good it can be addictive and lead to gluttony. I'm guilty (5 veggie burgers a day).
Last night I saw a harrowing Australian movie called "Candy". It was about addiction and the male lead chaacter looked like a good friend of mind that is loosing the battle. He's lost his wife, friends and law license. He was and probably still is one of the most peaceful individuals I have ever met. Since he opted to be addicted to an illegal substance he is ostracised like a pariah. Many of his former friends are functioning alcoholics who have no mercy for him. Mean hypocrites with no empathy.
What was it like talking to the kids about craft? Or maybe it hasn't happened yet? That experience would be a blog I'd love to read.
Steve, I heard from a acquaintence you played a brilliantly gig at the vegan day, and just how amazing you looked.
My main aim just now is to remove milk (liquid meat) from my diet. Having difficulty loosing cheese though.

Hi sk, glad to hear your busy weekend went so well and NO, it's not vain checking yourself out in the mirror, that's what they're for! On the veg subject, I have to be honest and say the only reason I went to wvd two years in a row was to watch you perform, but after attending last Sunday and seeing and reading the literature on the cruelty and disgusting way meat comes to us ready for eating, I'll never be eating meat again. It's taken me 41 years to make the decision, but I'm so glad I have and I'll be sticking to it this time (yes, even throughout the dreaded Greek Easter feast which features barbequing L--B, blahhh!!!). So thanks for being there last week sk.

Got tickets for the Kev Carmody show, good on ya for getting this gig. After the show want all the goss from our trusted artiste, performer, music reviewer (you know like Molly). Have u got a new manager, you're getting some really good work lately. Dreampt the other nite you were a judge on Aust Idol, don't think that will ever come true, but never say never. Maybe there's another play in the future? Hold onto ye olde pipe.

By the way, I have owned and ridden horses, and the last one was an ex-racehorse. I've spent a fair bit of time on the track and was a racing writer at one stage. Overall, thoroughbreds love racing and it's something that comes naturally to them. generally they're pampered, very we;ll cared for, fed, vetted, excercised and adored. I definitely wouldn't describe it as animal cruelty./ A few flicks with the whip down the home straight doesn't do too much harm in the balance of life overall. As horses wouldn't otherwise be on the planet these days now we have cars and buses and trams and aeroplanes and bikes and ships doing it all, this is their crack at life on this planet. Compared to the lives many humans lead, it's downright paradise.
Although clearly a lot of domestic animal rearing in this country and overseas is strongly objectionable, and often cruel, I've often wondered about this dilemma: that without being raised as domestic animals, ducks, chooks, sheep, cattle, goats, horses etc would have no life at all. People would see no commercial value in their roaming land freely in most cases, and if they're not protected species, they would simply never get a chance to exist at all. Therefore, if domestic animals were all reared with kindness and care before being humanely killed, would it be unethical to give them that chance at living? This is something i wonder about sometimes SK. I realise that eating meat is anathema to you, but what about that ethical dilemma? Is it better that they never lived at all?
