here i am
in the greene room
tucson my man
oh whatta lovely olde theatre
whatta lovely part of town
whatta pleasant 115 degree breeze blowing down mainstreet
thats one way to keep he dope peddlars of the streets
115 degrees
actually its keeping everyone off the streets here
there aint no one out there on foot
around the edges of the towns are forlorn shacks
motels gone bust
ghosts in those dark boarded up broken down dreams mister
people lived n died doing it the hard way
living in the heat and hopelessness
of chickenwire, rusted caravans n wrecked cars
living inside in the airconditioning
the constant hum n hiss of the fans
the absolute omnipresence of the heat
i accept it
and it leaves me alone
like a big dog you treat cautiously n with respect
dont resist this heat
or itll chase you down n dry you out
dont hide from it
itll find you
just accept it
laugh about it
its like a blazing sauna outside
ah
but the desert nights
full of.....what?
oh something
you gotta feel it
the crowd last night were very very nice
the show went down well
i thoroughly enjoyed myself
showing off n being silly
when we lock in n fire on all four
we are inexorable
tim powles getting an energy burst
and the whole band lifts off
like a booster rocket has kicked in
pk n mwp are superb players
they still achieve the thing we go for
with accoustic guitars
we hadda ball
a lot more people there then ya mita thort
seems arizona n the cruchh can kiss n make up now
now tonite is tucson
and its a little more boho arty here than last nite
you know people read rimbaud at the rodeo
no no
im just kidding
im starting like arizona
ya gotta be tuff to live here
its almost like siberia in negative
i reckon i'd rather the heat than the cold
i reckon i rather tucson than glomsk
wow
imagine if yer mum was a navaho indian n dad wassa eskimo
youd have all climates covered
youd be able to handle the extremes
n
then imagine a boho n a "straight" having kids
youd get a guy who could write songs
and
read his recording contract

opposites add up hey...enjoy the heat dude...
Last nite's show WAS nice, weren't it? I loved it when you guys all kicked it in gear, and it seemed like the songs could just play themselves. Like they just had to happen.
Man, now I'm kicking myself that I didn't make arrangements to go down to Tuckson and see y'all play show #2. What the hell was I thinkin?
Last night I could just close my eyes and it didn't even seem like you were playing an "acoustic" show. The sound was full and rich. Still... I long for you guys to return with the whole electric thing. I wanna hear Tantalized blasted out, or Ripple, or a million other tunes that would benefit from the addition of grit and distortion.
You can't kiss and make up with AZ yet!!! Not until you guys come back and kick some ass with a full throttle, wall to wall electric show.
SK,
unfortunately New Orleans will be very hot too, but hot & humid. But if it rains at least it won't be as hot.
I'd like to extend a heartfelt thank you for coming to post-Katrina New Orleans. We are down but not yet out. Your coming here means a lot.
Well I will see you in about a week.
Rimbaud at the Rodeo...a delicious title for an album or book methinks...or at least a little tune
we loved ya in tempe steve. if that's what an acoustic show is, i can't imagine a full on electric one. you broke all expectations and then blew out the windows with even more than we could have thought we wanted.
thanks for a magical nite.
Tucson is a wonderful place. I lived there for 8 mos. in 1994. If you have the time, try to wander in Saguaro National Park (early a.m. or sunset). Sunsets in the desert over the mountains are some of the most beautiful you will see. The medicine man dances with Ra.
SK - Sweet Karma
Hope your awficial documents met with big smiles at customs.
Wassa sad eyed lady of he lowlands when ya didnae answer my question (was only 1, not like some). But I forgive ya. Ol Father Time is always lurking and ya hadda lot on yer plate.
Go forth and spread your magic music in the USA, Mr. Bassman.

Steven,
That just made me laugh out loud.
Glad to hear that the tour is going well thus far. I hope your ears ain't a ringing too much.
Btw, since TP is (and will forever be) the newbie in the group, do you make him do all the driving between gigs?
Freddy
One week down sk, and it sounds like you've blown them away so far. It's kinda hard reading all the great reviews from the fans here, and not being there to see you play live :(
I'd be curious to hear what New Orleans looks like these days after the hurricane, I was there in 1990 and I remember it being a beautiful place. Especially all the little jazz&blues clubs and the French Quarter (I think that's what that area was called).
Have fun and keep on rockin' in the U.S.A.!
Enjoy the heat my sweet!

ps I am workin as we speak at a location that will blow yr mind for the NZ forest gig set for later in the year.
Sorry for the late comment - I'm just back from the So. Cal shows.
The San Diego show was magic, as somehow I knew it would be. Yes, you absolutely did transcend. Wonderful venue. Not a bad crowd, eh? I think we even behaved ourselves.
The Grove might have felt empty-ish because it is so huge, and no one seemed to want to sit in those folding chairs under the stage. The tables were pretty much filled - of course ours had two empty seats cuz Denise couldn't make it : ( But you guys SO rocked, and the audience loved you. I loved you! You looked like you were really having fun up there. Did I mention you rocked?
We also brought several friends to these shows, and everyone really enjoyed it. Hey, that's one way to spread the word, kids!
I am still on cloud nine ..
love,
Sandy
sounds like you guys are rockin
keep having fun and love the last images

nice joke there at the end, sk
cracked me up

tp
Thank you. You made us all so beautiful.
if you find your way back through tucson (or phoenix for that matter) i'd be more than happy to cater fine vegan viddles for the length of your stay.
both arizona shows were lovely. i've waited so long. you never knew it, but thank you for holding my hand and guiding me through the last 14 years of my life. you made the dust that settled a little less thick.

Tempe. Cool. But what is tempeh?
John
This world could use a bit more silliness. Kick ass & leave 'em wanting more!!
Thanks for making Atlanta one of your stops. I'm looking forward to it. Your fan, LG
Hahaha - "rimbaud at the rodeo" ...surely a worthy song title, or at least a passing line. Keep knocking 'em dead SK.... verily you guys do rock.
This is an excerpt from a review of the tempe show that heatherspace posted on another site, I hope she doesn't mind me posting a small bit of it here, but I found it rather insightful,
"he's really belting at points, and it reminded me of our conversation during the Isidore interview about his confidence as a singer - it shows, but it's my honest opinion that it moves beyond the technical aspect and into a certain finding of center, if you will. I really feel like I'm hearing Steve Kilbey sing for the first time nowadays, over and over. So much love."
It sounds as though you may have found your 'deep place'
whatever your doing differently, keep it up!
you've got the audience spellbound.
Hope your feeling better about things, a sense of humor definitely helps!
Wish I could've seen that tempe show,
I'd love to have see you laugh and smile (you always look so serious!)
lots of love
dogs and diamonds burning bright

ppps. sue c - dylan moran to play sk in the fillum?
pppps. the comment box is a bit shaky on the uptake today
I awoke today & fer once I remembered the dream-A ship (smaller than the titanic, but larger than a 2 masted sail boat.) A ship made of turquoise mosaic tiles-Persian rugs on the deck-Tim piloting-Pete, somewhere below doin'Pete stuff-I was having a conversation with Steve & Marty ,(I wish I could remember what was said)Then Jimmy Buffett was there-He'd found his salt- He's now looking for a lime.Just then things became horribly mortifying-- I awoke--
Perhaps a 4 day Cabo sorta cruise -The Church as the Ships' band, Allaboard fans! Less equipment set up/breakdown .Etc.
sorry about this unrelenting heat, steve. it must be weird coming from a place that is in the dead of winter right now to a place that is hotter'n hell.
well, at least somebody is enjoying this heatwave~~i.e. the utility companies with their record profits. **groan**
can't wait to see you friday in dallas.
>>note to adele yvonne: i'm from new orleans, too. thanks to katrina i'm in ft worth now. i saw the guys in '98 at the house of blues. wish i could be there again this year rockin' along with ya. it'll feel weird seeing them in dallas this time around!!
Glad my little home town of tux-on was good to you and the fellers. Jis don't get hit wit no tumble weeds nawh! Seriously, it was good to know that Tucson treated you guys alright. I thought you would like the Realto. I wanted to badly to be there for that particular show, but my little brother did the representin'. He thought I was joking when I told him it would be an acoustic show, but I guess he must have loved it anyway!! He's one of those that were expecting to see The Crunch via Starfish! I hadda set him straight...no pun intended. I'll see yas in Chicago. Thanks so much for the great updates along the journey. Keep up the posi-vibe! Stay safe, keep rockin' (and rollin!)
Peace and lubb,
BV
hey, why do you guys refer to the electrified version of the church as circa 88 starfish????doesnt make any sense. They still play electric, and some of those songs-so whats with the rehash idea?? Its like saying the church are making a comeback?? or something off like that....first of all, yes, having not seen them since like 93? here in austin(SXSW dudnt count) i wood like to hear some of the astounding atmospherics, yes? right? But we are obviously just happy to see and hear our all time favoriteband...maybe their ears are a little blown?? anyhow, at least i wont be 1000yards away disconnected like some cow, peering over babblers and other, ahem, mobby folks( yeah takes all kinds) even for the CHURCH, the most refined band of all time!!!!we all wonder about this, Im sure...Anyway and How, Love to everyone who is smitten by sk and the channel of its being, Sure wish i knew some of ya...Bye.
Keep doing what only you can do, SK.
Proud of you and the chaps. 115? Can't even begin to imagine it. I've never been out of Europe. Not sure I could face that kind of heat!
Love you more,
Dave M
dressed like a priest you was
you can borrow my lawyer if you like
i have him on retainer
he does like to be fed regular and gets cranky
Just a note. Listening to Kid A. Thom Yorke cites the Church as his Musical roadmap. Two Genius artists.
love,
Brian
Also, Steve i would love to play some of my songs for you sometime. You inspired me to play guitar. Ever since on the Sometime Anywhere acoustic tour in Washington Square, DC.
My adoration is nothing more than respect. And I respect you.
Honestly, I feel priveledged to have lived in a time you were creating.
love,Brian
Steve,
"heatherspace" was right on w/her review of your voice. In Santa Barbara, I remember listening to you in that tiny club and also feeling like I was hearing you for the first time. "All I Know" would've brought me to my knees had I not been sitting down already. As an amateur writer, it frustrates me that I cannot find the words to describe the wonder of listening to your voice. But then it's such a magical, mystical, emotional experience for me...perhaps it would belittle it to put it into words. Other than....you've still got it baybee!
love,
denise

Renee and Denise - thanks for the kind words, and of course I don't mind. And just a note to any and all commentators here that show reviews are welcome and encouraged over on Hotel Womb.
Steve - what a lovely (and accurate!) picture of our town. "Siberia in reverse" - love it.
Er, "Siberia in negative" rather.

The many surfaces make it easier for a casual player to strum much more ASSERTIVELY and AGRESSIVELY. For the timid to attempt some major POWER-CHORDAGE.

Thanks for playing Tucson. Last night, you managed to exceed my expectations for the acoustic show. The musicianship was incredible and the sound was wonderful. It's hard to make the Rialto sound so good. It was probably the best sound I've heard there ever.
If only half of our hip population wasn't out of town in cooler climates...
A show of beauty.
hilarious closer sk. get hold of a copy of the soundtrack to paris tesxas by ry cooder. it's all over where you are now. it's seeeeensational.... ain't going to phoenix, are ya? kiss a roadrunner for me
